Cupping Therapy

 What is cupping?

Cupping is a method of traditional Chinese medicine that I use within the clinic.  It can be used on its own or alongside an acupuncture treatment.  Cupping therapy has evolved overtime.  In Chinese medicine the earliest evidence of cupping can be traced back to the early Han Dynasty.

Today we use either glass or plastic shaped cups that when placed onto the skin create a vacuum effect which causes the tissues to be pulled up into the cups.  This vacuum effect aids in the circulation of blood to that area, relieving tension, loosening muscles and increasing the healing process.  The cups are then left stationary onto the skin or moved using gliding techniques similar to that of a massage.

Benefits of Cupping Therapy

The main benefits of cupping therapy are to help to restore the natural flow of energy throughout your body.  We see pain in the body as a stagnation of blood and/or qi.  Where the qi and blood cannot flow freely there will be stagnation.  This stagnation can be the cause of many aches and pains within the body.  Using cupping alongside acupuncture or as an individual treatment can work on removing that blockage of stagnation, loosen muscles and encourage blood flow to the area.

Cupping can also be used to help with lung function such as clearing congestion from colds or issues with asthma.  For more information please contact Remedy Acupuncture.
